A year-old San Antonio toddler who was pinned under a car in an accident last month at the ExcellEd Montessori Plus School has died, school officials confirmed Friday in a statement.
Mkaya Amrani was pronounced dead Thursday after sustaining life-threatening injuries during the Dec. 19 incident, according to the Express-News.
As audience members left a holiday performance at ExcellEd’s far Northside campus, a parent accelerated her vehicle, colliding with another car and crashing through the fence around the school’s playground, according to the daily.
Five children, all around a year old, were taken to the hospital. Amrani was in critical condition after being pinned under the car. Mkaya’s teacher, Alexia Rosales, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to KSAT.
“Mkaya brought light and joy to our school, and her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled,” the school said in Friday’s statement. “As we grieve together, we are committed to supporting our students, staff and families during this difficult time.”
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. However, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office previously said the driver, who hasn’t been publicly identified, suffers from a medical condition that may have contributed to the accident.
No charges have been filed against the driver. However, that person has stopped cooperating with authorities and has hired legal counsel, the daily reports.
