KSAT-12 news anchor Steve Spriester is leaving the news desk after more than three decades on the air in San Antonio, station officials said Thursday.
The veteran anchor, who’s covered five NBA Championships along with presidential conventions and headline-grabbing tragedies including the Uvalde school shooting will do his last broadcast for the ABC affiliate on Friday, Aug. 29. After his departure, he’ll join legal-advocacy group Perfected Claims as its head of strategic communications, according to KSAT.
“It hasn’t been an easy decision to step away after all these years at KSAT-12. The station has been my home, and I’m grateful for the support I’ve received,” Spriester said in a statement. “But it’s time for the next chapter. I am deeply thankful to the viewers and the community who have welcomed me into their homes, engaged with me on a personal level, and made San Antonio a better place.”
Spriester joined KSAT in 1995 as a general assignments reporter before jumping to the position of weekend anchor the following year. A stint as a weekday anchor and investigative reporter followed. In 2000, he took over as anchor of the station’s 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. news broadcasts.
His career recognitions include three Lone Star Emmy Awards, two Telly Awards and a Texas AP win for Best Newscast, according to station officials.
“Steve has been a cornerstone of San Antonio’s media landscape for over three decades,” KSAT Vice President and General Manager Ashley Parker said in an emailed statement. “But beyond the headlines, he’s built deep relationships, listened to his community and shared stories that have resonated with viewers. While we’ll miss seeing him on the air, we are thrilled for Steve’s next chapter.”
Spriester’s departure follows roughly a year behind an exodus of on-air talent at the station, owned by the Graham Media Group conglomerate. In May 2024, veteran broadcasters Mark Austin, Jessie Degollado, Marilyn Moritz, Mike Osterhage, Ursula Pari and David Sears all announced their retirements. News staffer Tiffany Huertas followed a few months later.
The retirements followed the high-profile departure of KSAT sports anchor Greg Simmons, who resigned in early 2023 after a DWI charge, and news anchor Isis Romero who announced in summer 2021 that she’d been fired from the station.
