After three years of North Side traffic headaches, the Texas Department of Transportation is finally set to open the long-awaited Loop 1604 flyover eastbound to I-10.

The ramp will officially open at 5 p.m. this Thursday, according to TxDOT officials.

“Are you ready for an easier commute?” the state agency tweeted Wednesday morning.

We’re guessing the answer to that is a resounding “Yes, of course!”

The eastbound ramp is the third to open as part of the $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion Project. The highway expansion has been a traffic nightmare for Northsiders since work began in 2022, resulting in frequent lane closures and prolonged delays, including work that routed drivers onto access roads.

Although the completion of the ramp should alleviate some of those headaches, the project isn’t expected to wrap up in its entirety until next year, according to state officials.

However, once it does, it’s expected to cut commute times by 80 minutes. Or so TxDOT maintains.
