Yolanda Saldivar, the woman who shot and fatally injured Tejano singer and South Texas icon Selena Quintanilla-Perez, has been denied parole nearly three decades after her death.
The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles released a statement Thursday saying it had turned down Saldivar’s parole request because the nature of her offense makes her an ongoing threat.
“The record indicates that the instant offense has elements of brutality, violence, assaultive behavior or conscious selection of victim’s vulnerability indicating a conscious disregard for the lives, safety, or property of others, such that the offender poses a continuing threat to public safety,” the board said.
Saldivar’s next parole review is set for March 2030.
In a joint statement, Selena’s husband Chris Perez and the Quintanilla family said they were “grateful” for the board’s decision. They also thanked fans for their continued support, adding that it’s been a “source of strength and healing.”
“While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand for the beautiful life that was taken from us and from millions of fans around the world far too soon,” the statement said.
