A Silicon Valley company that builds power distribution and control systems will develop a $200 million manufacturing plant at the Brooks development that’s expected to create 3,000 jobs.
Industrial Electric Manufacturing (IEM) will use the 1 million-square-foot plant to crank out engineered power equipment for data centers, the healthcare industry, energy companies and advanced manufacturing, according to details revealed Tuesday by Bexar County officials.
Assuming IEM meets its projection of reaching full employment by 2030, the plant would be the biggest economic development win for the San Antonio area since it landed Toyota’s Tundra pickup truck plant in 2003. Positions at the plant will be in manufacturing, engineering, logistics and corporate operations, and 90% will pay an annual base salary of $53,000.
To lure the company’s investment, Bexar County Commissioners Court approved a 10-year, 70% tax abatement on $80 million in personal property investment related to the plant. County officials estimate the value of the incentive package at $1.55 million.
“For critical industry products, like electrical conduits that are in demand nationwide, San Antonio is the best-positioned city to logistically deliver products in the face of climate change and economic headwinds,” Precinct 4 Commissioner Tommy Calvert said in a statement. “We provide a low cost of doing business, a workforce ready for advanced manufacturing and we’re proud to offer incentives that deliver thousands of jobs to San Antonio and thousands of products to the world.”
IEM also received a $3.36 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund to tied to 450 of the jobs it’s creating.
