San Antonio State Rep. Ray Lopez won’t seek a fifth term in the Texas Legislature next year, the Texas Tribune reports.
The 75-year-old Democratic lawmaker won his first election to represent House District 125 in 2019 after serving four terms on San Antonio City Council. The district, which includes portions of West and Northwest San Antonio is considered solidly blue.
Lopez told the Tribune he’ll throw his support behind Donovon Rodriguez, his chief of staff, who plans to run to represent the district. However, the lawmaker also told the Tribune he expects the race to succeed him will be crowded.
“One of the most important things an elected official can do is to create a succession plan to continue the principles they have defended or advanced,” Lopez said in the statement provided to the San Antonio Report. “That’s exactly what I am doing as I transition to the next stage of my life.”
Lopez joined other Democratic House members in leaving the state to stymie Gov. Greg Abbott’s efforts to redraw the state’s electoral maps to win more Republican seats in the U.S. House. He left for Illinois during the quorum break, according to media reports.
