Texas-based conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is so broke that he could be forced to auction off his beloved cat Mushu to settle his billion-dollar debt to the families of Sandy Hook victims.
Indeed, Jones’ far-right InfoWars site and accompanying intellectual property were sold off at auction to satirical website The Onion earlier this month. Items that weren’t sold in that lot — including an Infowars armored vehicle, production equipment and a Winnebago — will go on the block Dec. 10, according to auction house ThreeSixty Asset Advisors.
And if the December auction can’t raise enough cash, the federal bankruptcy court could order the liquidation of Jones’ personal assets, which includes a 4-year-old Ragdoll cat with an estimated value of $200, according to a June court-ordered inventory filing.
A federal bankruptcy judge ordered Jones in 2022 to liquidate most of his assets to pay off his $1.5 billion defamation settlement with the families of the 2012 Sandy Hook mass shooting. The families sued after Jones repeatedly and falsely claimed that the shooting, in which 28 people died, was a hoax and that the parents of the victims were crisis actors.
Jones warned his supporters in a 2023 video that the U.S. Department of Justice was looking into seizing his beloved Mushu.
“They were very serious about the cat and its value, and they want the cat for the Sandy Hook families,” Jones in apparent attempt to curry sympathy.
He continued: “What? You want my children next? You want to sacrifice my children or something?”
Jones added that he paid somewhere around $2,000 for Mushu.
Cat fanciers can sign up to for a chance to buy Mushu and other Jones assets by visiting the ThreeSixty Asset Advisors website. Those who sign up can start making bids Dec. 2.
