A North Texas GOP chairman who’s drawn fire for a series of incendiary online remarks has resigned his position and now plans to run for a seat on the Texas Railroad Commission.

Bo French tweeted out an announcement Wednesday that he’s stepped down as Tarrant County Republican Party Chairman to pursue a slot on the powerful three-seat board that oversees Texas’ oil-and-gas industry.

“This will be the best way that I can defend Texas, stop the Islamic invasion, and defeat the left,” French said in the tweet.

French, a far-right firebrand in the state’s largest purple county, will face off in his party’s primary against Railroad Commission Chair Jim Wright, an ally of the GOP establishment.

French has made a name for himself for a recent string of brash, headline-grabbing antics on social media.

Earlier this year, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick called on French to resign after the chairman tweeted out a poll asking whether Jews or Muslims pose a bigger threat to national security.

“Antisemitism and religious bigotry have no place in Texas,” Patrick said at the time. “I am calling for the immediate resignation and replacement of Bo French as Tarrant County GOP Chairman.”

French drew fire again last month over an online comment predicting SNAP recipients would “chimp out” after having their benefits cut. Many interpreted the comment as French likening Black people to chimps.

If French does manage to win the Republican primary for the Railroad Commission seat, he would likely face Rep. Jon Rosenthal, D-Houston, who as of press time is the only Democrat running for the board.
