To quote U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz’s favorite show The Simpsons: “D’oh!”

The Texas Republican and avid traveler is in hot water for remarks during a Tuesday morning Senate hearing in which he inexplicably urged colleagues, “Let’s stop attacking pedophiles,” Mediate reports.

Look, we know that you voted against releasing the Epstein files, but you’re saying the quiet part out loud, Rafael!

Even more perplexing, Cruz made the statement as part of a larger call for bipartisanship. His full remarks, courtesy of Mediaite, are as follows:

“Sen. Booker also said we should have bipartisan agreement. I think that’s a great idea — we should have bipartisan agreement,” Cruz said. “How about we all come together and say ‘Let’s stop murders.’ How about we all come together and say ‘Let’s stop rape.’ How about we all come together and say ‘Let’s stop attacking pedophiles.’”

Erm, we all know that former President Bill Clinton is mentioned in Jeffrey Epstein’s court documents, but this is not the way we imagined our parties finally coming together to bridge the divide, Ted. Could you maybe pick a more wholesome point of unification than pedophilia?

Just a thought.

All joking aside, rather than catch his verbal blunder, Cruz moved on to praise President Donald Trump for his crackdown on crime in Washington, D.C., saying homicides are down 58%, robberies are down 57% and sexual crimes are down 40% in the nation’s capital.

Hey, you know what’s a sexual crime, Ted? Pedophilia.
