Charm — and the owner’s artistic touches — abound in a Spanish-style house recently listed in Monte Vista for $619,000.

Built in 1926, three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath property retains many of its quirky original architectural details, such as arched built-in cabinets, intricate wrought iron window grills, original light fixtures and wood floors that have been lovingly restored. Before even entering the house, guests will pass through saloon-style doors in the entryway, which open onto a covered front porch with a rustic log ceiling.

Remarkably, the house was owned by just one family from the time it was built until it was sold to the current owners, according to its listing agent. Charles W. Kromer and his wife Vera, the original owners, left the house to their son William.

The presence of the Kromers is still felt throughout the house. Nestled in a wall of the living room, a small arched door originally once housed a telephone cabinet. When the current owners opened it, they found family photographs from the early 1900s and a pair of infant shoes.

“It was completely frozen in time,” agent Marlaine Klaus said.

Though the house oozes history, it’s modern where it counts, including brand new plumbing and gas systems, updated electrical wiring, and a new concrete foundation. The current owner also relocated the kitchen into a larger hallway that served no clear purpose, creating a large, bright space with all-new appliances.

Though the stained-glass accent in the marble shower may look original to the house, current owner Elaine Lutton is an artist who incorporates her glass work into every house she restores. One stained glass window in the living room is original to the house, but the rest are her own, blending seamlessly with the home’s historic features.

This home is listed by Marlaine Klaus with Kimberly Howell Properties.
