UT-San Antonio President Taylor Eighmy has publicly thrown his support behind Project Marvel, a proposed $4 billion sports-and-entertainment district anchored by a new Spurs arena at Hemisfair.
“I strongly support the Sports & Entertainment concept,” Eighmy said in a tweet. “I encourage members of our community to be fully informed as they vote on these two propositions (A&B) this November. The data shared here are valuable sources of information. Please continue to be informed and vote!”
Eighmy tagged his comments on a post by the public-private economic development group Greater: SATX. In it tweet, the group said building a new NBA arena will help San Antonio retain educated talent, which often relocates to other Texas cities for job opportunities.
“If we want to stay competitive, we need to build a city where people want to be,” the Greater SATX post said. “The proposed Sports & Entertainment District is that kind of investment — growing opportunity and fueling San Antonio’s momentum.”
Eigmy’s comments come before Bexar County voters head to the polls Nov. 4 to decide whether to raise the county’s visitor tax to 2%. If passed, that additional revenue from the visitor’s tax would go towards financing a new stadium for the Spurs.
UT-San Antonio’s Center for Public Opinion Research also is expected to unveil a new poll on public support for the arena vote this Wednesday.
