What with tuition, parking decals, textbooks, gas, and those oh-so-perfectly-timed everyday mishaps, who has the money to live a financially care-free college life? Thankfully, in San Antonio, being a college student brings respect. Various locations throughout the city offer struggling students noteworthy discounts. Here are a few of my favorites.
San Antonio Museum of Art
If you’re already a member, then you have the liberty of browsing the eclectic collection of art on display at SAMA on a regular basis for free. Not a member? No worries! Students pay only $5 a visit — three dollars off full adult admission. Better yet: admission is free from 4pm to 9pm every Tuesday. 200 Jones Avenue, (210) 978-8100
McNay Art Museum
Whether you’re the artsy type, or just want to impress a date, the McNay will never fail you. Picnic on the beautiful grounds or flaunt your smarts while viewing the vast selection within the museum. In this mansion, you can experience offerings ranging from the medieval era to unique contemporary pieces. Students $5. 6000 N New Braunfels, (210) 824-5368
San Antonio Botanical Garden
These 33 acres of vibrant vegetation are not just for nature enthusiasts as you might assume. The San Antonio Botanical Garden hosts numerous events — you’re likely to find one fitting for any occasion. Purchase stunning plants for your apartment or dorm, encounter Art in the Garden, enjoy live music, or shop fresh, local produce at the Thursday farmer’s market. Students $5. 555 Funston, (210) 207-3250
San Pedro Playhouse
This newly renovated theater features prominent plays and musicals, as well as local productions. After one visit to this local gem, you will want to be the one on stage. You can be! SPP relies on its talented local volunteers for outstanding performances year round. Drop by and become mesmerized by the talent and theater itself for $15 if you are a student under 22 — $10 off the GA ticket price. 800 W Ashby, (210) 733-7258
The Overtime Theater
Want to put your money toward something one of a kind. At The Overtime Theater, you can view original and innovative dramatic works. Located in The Blue Star Art Complex, this theater provides exposure to cutting-edge theater and improv comedy. Being a student gets you through the door for $9; general admission $12. 1414 S Alamo, Suite 103 (210) 557-7563 •
