One of the oldest homes in San Antonio's historic Monte Vista area is now for sale

The venerable Monte Vista Historic District is a showcase of 1920s-era homes that show off the "golden age" of San Antonio architecture.

However, a recently listed property in the north-of-downtown neighborhood actually predates that opulent period in local design and construction, according to its listing agent. The three-bedroom, two-bath property was built during the turn of the century as a farmhouse, and the rest of the neighborhood sprouted up around it.

While county records show the home was built in 1930, Broker Lynn A. Boyd III said the actual date of its construction was likely closer to 1906, when its then-owners the Frank J. Doyle family oversaw a thriving dairy farm on the outskirts of the growing Alamo City.

Indeed, the Doyles may not even have been the first residents of the home, author Donald Everett wrote in his book San Antonio's Monte Vista: Architecture and Society in a Gilded Age. Everett noted that the house may have been the oldest one north of Mulberry Avenue.

Listed for $755,000, the 2,000-square-foot property includes its original hardwood floors and working stone living-room fireplace. While the kitchen has been updated with modern appliances, its built-in cabinetry and colorful tile work help it stay true to turn-of-the-century feel.

The home also features screened porch with mission tile floors and a beadboard ceiling, and the shady backyard is outfitted with stone patios, covered spaces and a fountain.

This home is listed by Lynn A. Boyd III with Phyllis Browning Co.
