Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-09-29

If Dolly Parton insured her boobs for $600,000, and Lord of the Dance Michael Flatley insured his legs for 25-million pounds, how much must an insurance company shell out if Shakira’s hips stop gyrating? The Colombian pop princess shimmied her way to international celebrity promising her “Hips Don’t Lie.” But unlike most worldwide phenomenons catering to the very lowest common denominator to achieve fame, Shakira appears to have made few compromises since creating a polyglot musical style of Arabic, Latin, and American rock ‘n’ roll notes. She works with challenging producers like Rick Rubin and covers Metallica songs on a whim, giving her a credibility most pop stars can only (teenage) dream of. And then there’s scoring the 2010 FIFA World Cup official song title “Waka Waka (this time for Africa),” sadly sans a Fozzie the Bear cameo. The bellydancing helps, too, of course. She stops in SA as part of a promotional tour for her soon-to-be released bilingual album. 8pm, Sat Oct 2, $9.50-$149.50, AT&T Center, One AT&T Center,
