A 4-year-old boy died Sunday after he was bitten by a family dog at his home in Converse, according to reports.

Noah Trevino was playing in his backyard when an unidentified family member went outside to check on him. It was then that the family member saw the child lying on the ground and a "large mixed breed" dog biting the boy's neck. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar told KSAT that the dog was tied up at the time of the attack.

"It appears that the child may have gotten too close to the dog," Salazar told reporters.

KENS5 reports that the family member was able to free Noah, who was unresponsive, from the dog's grasp.

The boy's family performed CPR until sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene. Noah was then airlifted to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The dog was taken from the scene and will be observed and tested for rabies before being put down, according to KSAT.

Salazar is now reminding parents and guardians that children should never be left alone with a dog, even if it isn't vicious.

"This was a family dog," Salazar told reporters. "Even if the dog doesn't show any outward signs of aggression, sometimes they can be unpredictable."

According to KENS5, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the incident.
