A video of a woman taking a prolonged plunge along the San Antonio River Walk over the weekend is going viral on social media – and most folks are pretty disgusted.
The clip first appeared on the r/SanAntonio Reddit page on Saturday after user @your_fellow_lettuce uploaded a video of a woman police identified as Maria Herrera swimming in the river, twirling and even playing with a lump of floating algae.
The clip on Reddit has since garnered more than 1,500 likes and nearly 500, often humorous comments, as of press time.
In another clip of the bizarre incident uploaded by TikTok user @p.cakez, Herrera appears to be dancing to the music of a nearby mariachi band before being escorted out of the water by police.
“There’s nothing a good riverwalk swim won’t fix,” @p.cakez captioned the video.
According to SAPD, Herrera was taken into custody and was cited for violating a city ordinance that prohibits swimming along the River Walk. Violators can face fines of up to $500. The suspect was also booked on another, unrelated charge for an outstanding warrant.
Herrera was then transported taken to a mental health facility on an Emergency Detention.
Despite the possibility of fines – and general health concerns – the River Walk has a long history of folks willing to risk it all to wade in its muddy depths.
Last year, a video of a man sporting an Edgar haircut went viral after he was spotted doing laps in the river. In September 2022, a video of a woman swimming along the River Walk went viral.
Perhaps the most viral “river walk swimming” incident was when a man appeared to baptizing himself along the river walk in 2019.
