Atlanta-based Smalls Sliders is making good on a promised Texas expansion by opening its first San Antonio restaurant this fall.
A local franchisee for the burger brand expects to start construction later this spring on a store at 2453 W. Loop 1604 South, state construction records show. The Marbach Road-area eatery is scheduled for October completion and will cost $750,000 to build, according to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
Last year, officials with fast-growing Smalls Sliders revealed plans to expand its national footprint, including the addition of 12 San Antonio-area stores over the next six years.
The five-year-old chain — which includes retired NFL star Drew Brees as an investor — prides itself on keeping quality high by offering a limited menu: four types of sandwiches, three milkshake flavors and waffle-cut fries. It locates its restaurants in distinctive orange shipping containers referred to as “cans.”
Father-and-son duo Ramzi and Danny Hakim — who also operate 35-plus IHOP restaurants — hold the San Antonio franchise, according to Smalls Sliders. Beyond the Alamo City, the duo are considering Smalls locations in New Braunfels, San Marcos and Boerne.
“Having been in the restaurant industry for decades, I’ve been exposed to many emerging concepts over the years, but few have broken through the noise like Smalls Sliders,” Danny Hakim said in a statement.
