San Antonio celebrity chef Johnny Hernandez is closing his Southtown dining spot The Frutería to make way for a new concept, according to online posts.
The Frutería broke the news to diners via its social media channels, explaining that Saturday, Jan. 4 will be its last day of service.
“Join us January 3rd and 4th at La Fruteria Southtown as we bid farewell to this beloved concept and toast to a new era! Come enjoy delicious drinks, great vibes and celebrate with Chef Johnny Hernandez. Let’s make these last moments unforgettable!” the post read in its entirety.
A separate Dec. 26 Instagram post from The Frutería teased that a new concept is “coming soon.”
The Current reached out to Hernandez for details on the new concept and clarification on the fate of The Frutería’s satellite outpost at San Antonio International Airport. We got no response by press time.
Part of Hernandez’s Grupo La Gloria restaurant portfolio, The Frutería, 1401 S. Flores St., specialized in Mexican-style botanas, or snacks. The eatery also offered an array of signature margaritas, chef-curated tequila flights and a premium selection of mezcal.
