High-profile San Antonio chef Johnny Hernandez is teaming up with the San Antonio Philharmonic to create a food and beverage experience for the orchestra’s new home at the Scottish Rite Cathedral.
Starting next season, Hernandez—the man behind San Antonio staples such as La Gloria, Burgerteca and Botanero Lounge— will create a dining and beverage offerings to accompany San Antonio Philharmonic performances at the century-old venue. The orchestra moved into the location two blocks from the Alamo in January.
“The Scottish Rite Cathedral is a true gem of our city, steeped in history, architectural majesty and cultural heritage,” Hernandez said in a statement. “Partnering with the San Antonio Philharmonic and its creative and committed executive director Robert Treviño allows us to bring new life to this treasured space, celebrating the arts through food and community connection.”
While officials are still finalizing plans for next season, some ideas being discussed are a Sunday brunch series, dinner-and-show experiences and a below-ground lounge open seven days a week, according to Hernandez.
The Philharmonic also is working to add elevated concessions along with a gift shop and market to its space inside Scottish Rite. Through its partnership with Hernandez, the orchestra plans to launch new beverage program, which will include wine bar and cuvée service, signature cocktails and ultra-premium single-malt Scotch Whiskey.
“Food is a form of storytelling, just like music,” Treviño said in a statement. “We are creating a space where both mediums can speak to the soul, celebrate heritage and bring people together in meaningful ways.”
The San Antonio Philharmonic’s final shows of the season will take place this Friday and Saturday. The performances will feature Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the shows start at 7:30 p.m.
Hernandez will be in attendance to announce the launch of the new partnership.
