The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio this week took home the honor of being ranked among the world’s top 5% of universities for clinical medicine.

Indeed, UT Health San Antonio landed at No. 51 out of 1,000 best universities in U.S. News and World Reports’ 2024-25 Best Global Universities for Clinical Medicine. UT Health also ranked in the top 12% of Best Global Universities.

The rankings are based on whether universities have shown strength in producing research in fields including anesthesia, cardiology, general and internal medicine, gastroenterology, obstetrics, ophthalmology, radiology and surgery.

“Being ranked among the best in the world is a testament to the caliber of our research and the dedication of our faculty, students and staff,” UT Health San Antonio Senior Vice President for Research Jennifer Sharpe Potter said in a statement. “A global reputation allows us to attract diverse talent, foster international collaborations and address the most pressing health challenges across borders.”

UT Health – which announced its plan to merge with the nearby University of Texas at San Antonio – is the largest academic research institution in South Texas, boasting 1,500 researchers working across 108 specialized units. The institution also has more than 550 clinical trials underway, according to a press release.

“An increasing global recognition that we are a top-tier university is a reflection of our commitment to excellence and the groundbreaking discoveries that our investigators are making that have a global impact not only in advancing scientific knowledge but also in delivering novel solutions to human diseases that at present have no cures,” Vice Dean for Research Manzoor Bhat said in a statement.
