San Antonio is full of haunted places and urban legends, as those who live here can attest. But apparently, the Alamo City is getting national attention for its ghostly goings-on, particularly in its most haunted hotels.
According to a study released by Hotels.com, there has been a surge in searches for haunted hotels throughout the nation as Halloween approaches, with some cities piquing more paranormal interest than others.
San Antonio ranks third in the results, tying with New Orleans and Key West, Florida. Surprising no one, Salem, Massachusetts, tops the list. Eureka Springs, Arkansas comes in second thanks to the Crescent Hotel, a former hospital many now consider “America’s most haunted hotel.”
Like Key West and New Orleans, searches for haunted hotels in San Antonio have surged by 25%. Eureka has seen an increase of 35% and Salem a whopping 100%.
The Menger, the Sheraton Gunter, the Emily Morgan, the Lambermont and Victoria’s Black Swan Inn are among the Alamo City’s most haunted hotels for overnight stays, according to local legend.
Like the Crescent Hotel, the Emily Morgan started as a hospital, and sickly souls are said to still haunt its corridors. The Gunter is known for the grisly discoveries of Room 636 in particular, which the hotel discussed in a 2013 blog post on its website.
The Menger is said to be haunted by several distinct ghosts, including that of Sallie White, who was shot by a jealous husband, and Captain Richard King, who died on premises and is said to roam around the King Suite, appropriately.
