Hours before her disappearance, Olmos Park realtor Suzanne Simpson told her mother via phone that her husband had physically abused her, the Express-News reports.
The revelation in the missing person case came during a Sunday vigil at San Antonio’s Lourdes Grotto, where Simpson’s mother recalled a phone call she had with her daughter prior to her Oct. 6 disappearance.
“She called me up and told me the things Brad had done to her physically,” Simpson’s mother, Barbra Clark, said during the vigil, the daily reports. “Well, I came up with an alternative plan for her and hoped that she would move in with me. I never got to tell her the plan.”
Clark’s comments are the latest twist in the headline-grabbing case.
Simpson and her husband Brad both attended an event at the exclusive Argyle Club on the night of Oct. 6, according to authorities.
Afterward, the couple had a physical altercation in front of their $1.4 million Olmos Park mansion, and neighbor said he saw Brad Simpson “grabbing [Suzanne Simpson’s] upper torso area to gain control of her body,” according to a police report.
The neighbor also reported hearing a series of screams moments later from a nearby wooded area. Brad Simpson then left the home in his black GMC pickup, returning an hour or two later, the police report stated.
Brad Simpson reported his wife missing the next day after she failed to pick up their daughter from school.
On Oct. 9, authorities arrested Brad Simpson in Kendall County. He’s currently being held in Bexar County on a $2 million bond on family violence and unlawful restraint charges. A bond reduction hearing scheduled for Tuesday has since been postponed, KSAT reports.
Even if Brad Simpson makes bail, there’s a likelihood he would be immediately transferred to federal custody, according to the Express-News.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives filed a detainer against the suspect last week, the daily reports. The detainer stems from a sealed federal indictment based on a prior investigation, according to the daily.
On Tuesday, KSAT reported that the search for Suzanne Simpson has moved to a landfill in Southeast Bexar County.
At Sunday’s vigil, the missing woman’s mother said the family is “trying to be positive” but doesn’t believe she is still alive.
