Cascabel Mexican Patio, a quaint and colorful Southtown eatery focused on big interior-Mexican flavors, has shut down.

The restaurant, which launched in 2003, announced its closure this week in a Facebook post featuring the Ozzy Osbourne ballad “Mama, I’m Coming Home” played over a video walkthrough of its kitchen and art-filled dining room. The message offered no explanation why the business is ceasing operation.

“It’s been an AMAZING 22 years serving up great food, family recipes, awards and countless smiling faces,” the post said. “Thank you to each and everyone who came in and loved the food, even if [we] were outside of your comfort zone, thank you for stopping in and seeing the amazing art.”

The post added that the restaurant’s Facebook page will continue to stay in operation to share recipes.

Cascabel — which featured an outdoor dining area dotted with thatched umbrellas — drew raves for its flavorful takes on dishes from interior Mexico, including cochinita pibil, or citrusy Yucatán-style slow-cooked pork. The restaurant was also among the first in town to garner nods for its birria, the savory south-of-the-border meat stew that’s since emerged as a nationwide culinary trend.

Bucking Tex-Mex convention, the restaurant served up thick, handmade corn tortillas instead of the flour variety and included black beans, white rice and nopales as sides to its entrees.
