One of the state’s best-known barbecue purveyors just got a steamy side hustle — literally.
Terry Black’s Barbecue, already stirring up the Pearl district with a new restaurant and boutique hotel at 2100 Broadway, is now diving into wellness with The Depths, a 9,800-square-foot bathhouse at 1411 Alling St.
According to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, construction on the spa portion of the project is expected to start this spring and could cost about $8.3 million. Amenities will include multiple hot and cold spa rooms, cold plunges, salt floats, steam and mist rooms, and massage rooms — because nothing says “digest that brisket” like a soapy soak. The spa also will feature a locker room with full spa amenities.
In an interview with the San Antonio Business Journal, Terry Black’s co-owner Mark Black confirmed the spring start and emphasized that the spa, while technically part of the hotel, is designed as a community amenity rather than a traditional hotel-only facility.
“It’s a component of the hotel but it’s not really a hotel spa,” Black said. “It’s more open to the public.”
The hotel itself, planned for completion in 2028, will have more than 40 rooms and operate independently from the barbecue restaurant, though both share the same property. Black described the hotel as a neighborhood-focused project rather than a tourist-centric one, highlighting green spaces and shared areas for community use.
“So I hope it continues to grow with more kinds of local-style businesses, amenities and hospitality stuff,” he told the Business Journal. “We’re really bullish on it. We think it’s going to be something special and it already is.”
