San Antonio City Council on Thursday voted unanimously to confirm Jesse Salame Jr. as the city’s new chief of police, marking the first time an Alamo City native has permanently held the role in more than 20 years.
City Manager Erik Walsh appointed Salame, a 27-year SAPD veteran, to lead the force after previous chief William McManus retired this summer. McManus, who relocated here from Minneapolis, led the department since 2006.
Walsh selected Salame, 50, to serve as acting chief when McManus moved up his retirement date from September to July 10. An assistant chief at the time of his interim promotion, Salame also served as McManus’ chief of staff earlier in his career.
Salame will only the third Latino to head SAPD in the department’s 180-year history, according to the Express-News.
