The San Antonio Film Commission has awarded its 2019 Local Filmmaker Grants to directors Allison Herrera, Nathanial “Than” Niles, Justin Rodriguez and Dave Sims.
The matching grants, each in the amount of $5,000, will help the San Antonio-based filmmakers defray the cost of projects they’re working on through the end of 2019. To win one of the competitive grants, applicants must have at least $5,000 in funding commitments already in place.
“As we continue celebrating our city’s Tricentennial, the rest of Texas and the nation have been witness to San Antonio’s history, culture, and all that makes us a unique, world-class destination,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said in a statement. “And filmmaking in our city has been a significant part of that storytelling.”
Here’s a rundown of the directors’ award-winning projects:
- Child Fears (Herrera) – In this indie drama, a 30-something Latina lesbian with a history of sexual abuse heals through her self-discovery.
- Luminous (Niles) – This science fiction film tells the story of a security guard in a laboratory who battles a pesky flickering light without realizing he’s guarding something truly mind-blowing.
- Glossolalia (Rodriguez) – Darkness follows an aspiring television faith healer who will do anything to be the best in Texas.
- Cornyation (Sims) – A feature-length documentary chronicling Cornyation 2018 and the reign of King Anchovy, Charlie Biedenharn.
