Just in time for Juneteenth, the Tobin Center will come alive this Wednesday with Freedom’s Song: A Journey Through Gospel Radio, an event that honors the power of gospel music in Black history.

Freedom’s Song brings together music, collective memory and a greater understanding of the Civil Rights Movement. Providing more than just a chance to raise voices in worship, gospel performances and radio stations were tools of resistance and hope, playing a crucial role in disseminating information about protests, gatherings and calls to action through coded messages and specific songs.

Under the direction of Rev. Lemelle Taylor, Michael A. Potts and Earl “Skip” Jackson, the San Antonio Gospel Heritage Choir will present the concert portion of Freedom’s Song. The night also will feature a live performance and discussion with Grammy-winning special guest Bobby L. Jones — a legendary gospel artist and host of The Bobby Jones Gospel Radio Show.

$35 for pre-performance dining and reserved seating at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, $10 for reserved seating at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, H-E-B Performance Hall, 100 Auditorium Circle, (210) 223-3333, tobincenter.org.
