Texas country act the Josh Abbott Band will lead the 134th annual Battle of the Flowers Parade as the procession’s grand marshals, Fiesta San Antonio organizers said during a Tuesday press conference.
The parade will get underway at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 2.
Known for songs including “West Texas in My Eye,” “Settle Me Down” and “She’s Like Texas,” the Lubbock-based group has performed at Fiesta events before but has never led an event of this magnitude, lead singer Josh Abbott told KSAT.
“It is truly a big honor, and we are super excited,” he said.
The Josh Abbott band won’t be the only Lone Star State musical act to partake in this year’s parade. Indeed, this year’s Battle of the Flowers theme is “Melodies in Bloom — A Texas Serenade,” which pays homage to Texan artists across a variety of genres.
Last year’s parade, led by San Antonio Food Bank CEO Eric Cooper, celebrated things people love about San Antonio.
San Antonio’s First Battle of the Flowers Parade took place in 1891 as a way to honor the Alamo defenders and those who fought in the Battle of San Jacinto.
This year’s Fiesta celebrations will run from April 24 through May 4.
