San Antonio-based H-E-B has again been recognized as the nation’s best grocery store chain by U.K.-based consumer data-science firm Dunnhumby.
It’s the third consecutive year that consumers in a Dunnhumby report have ranked H-E-B as the top supermarket chain “thanks to its long-term customer value proposition.”
Dunnhumby’s annual rankings are based on the responses of more than 11,000 consumers. Shoppers this year’s report said saving money via promotions and rewards weighed more heavily on their decisions than in the past.
Prices, quality, assortment of goods, pricing consistency, goods in stock and overall shopping experience are among the factors consumers cited in polling. Digital offerings such as shopping apps, speed and convenience also weighed in their rankings.
In respective order, H-E-B was followed by New England regional grocery chain Market Basket, discounter Costco, Idaho-based WinCo and German multinational chain Aldi.
“This year’s RPI shows that the fundamentals still apply as H-E-B has proven year over year. Any format can win,” Dunnhumby’s President of the Americas Matt O’Grady said in a statement. “The first step is to understand your customers and how customers perceive you. Secondly, prioritize efforts to save your customers money that is consistent with your positioning. And finally, use the [Retail Price Index] as a framework to help you determine where you should invest and where you should make tradeoffs.”
