San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama is out for the rest of the season due to the discovery of a deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, the team officials said Thursday.
“The condition was discovered when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio following the All-Star Game in San Francisco,” the Spurs organization said in a statement on social media platform X. “Wembanyama is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024-25 regular season. The team will provide updates as appropriate.”
A deep vein thrombosis is a type of blood clot that forms due to injury or repeated stress on the upper arm, according to the Cleveland Clinic’s website.
The Spurs’ announcement comes hours before the team is set to take on the Phoenix Suns in a highly anticipated matchup at Austin’s Moody Center as part of the franchise’s annual I-35 Series.
Wemby’s injury also diminishes hopes the Silver and Black can make a playoff appearance this season. The team currently holds the 12th seed in the competitive Western Conference.
