Nationally recognized folklórico and flamenco dance group Guadalupe Dance Company will will mark 35 years in San Antonio with a performance this weekend called “Celebrando Tradiciones: Corazón y Raíz.”
The dance event will take place Thursday and Friday, Sept. 17-18, at the Carver Cultural Center’s Jo Long Theatre, 228 N. Hackberry St. Tickets are on sale now through the Carver box office and Ticketmaster.
“Corazón y Raíz,” or “Heart and Roots,” honors the vibrant cultural core that has guided the Guadalupe Dance Company throughout its years in San Antonio. The original choreography will tell a story through the Mexican dance traditions that the company is renowned for, with live music by the award-winning Mariachi Azteca de América.
It’s no coincidence that the celebration will take place at the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs Sept. 15-Oct. 15.
“Corazón y Raíz” explores the cycle of life, including how our community and culture bring us together. The performance is an all-encompassing showcase of authentic Mexican American artistry, featuring the traditional costumes, dance forms and music that inspire the vibrant South Texas culture.
In its 35 years, the Guadalupe Dance Company has emerged as one of San Antonio’s leading institutions for the teaching and performance of traditional Mexican dance. The organization provides classes open to the community, and offers scholarships to ensure its programs are accessible to all.
The organization started as a collective of passionate local artists called the Performance Artists’ Nucleus (PAN). Dance Director Jeannette Chavez and instructor Denise Rios are both original members who are celebrating 35 years with the Guadalupe.
