Groundbreaking New York troupe Parsons Dance will showcase its energetic and athletic ensemble work at the Carver Community Cultural Center this Thursday, marking group’s first San Antonio appearance in a decade.

The performance will include six works by founder and artistic director David Parsons, whom the New York Times calls “one of the great movers of modern dance.”

“San Antonio has such a great arts community, and we’re thrilled to return for the first time since 2016,” Parsons said in a statement. “The company has a longstanding connection to Texas dating back to 1990, and in the years since our last visit we’ve toured extensively — across Brazil, China, Europe, and throughout the United States. Now, we’re ready to come back to San Antonio to share both longtime favorites and newer works and to reconnect with the artists and audiences who make the city so special.”

Parsons’ career accolades include three Choreography Fellowship Grants from the National Endowment of the Arts; the American Choreography Award; the Dance Magazine Award; a Howard Gilman Fellowship, and the Dance Masters of America Annual Award. In 2018, he received the Capezio Award, one of the most prestigious honors in dance.

In addition to the more than 75 works that he has created for his own ensemble, Parsons has received commissions from the American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the American Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow, the Spoleto Festival and Het Muziektheater in Amsterdam, among others.

$35, 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, Jo Long Theater at the Carver Community Cultural Center, 226 N. Hackberry St., (210) 207-7211, thecarver.org.
