The photo exhibition “Selena Forever/Siempre Selena” opens this Thursday at the Briscoe Western Art Museum, offering a riveting view of the late Tejano star Selena on her rise to international fame.
Featured in the museum’s Kat Marmion Gallery, the show gathers images San Antonio photographer John Dyer captured of the iconic South Texas performer between 1992 and 1994. The photos include some of the most recognizable portraits of Selena ever published, along with boutique photographs, magazine covers and rarely seen ephemera.
Together, the pieces represent the most complete large-scale exhibition of Dyer’s Selena work to date, according to Briscoe officials.
The show will run through Jan. 4, 2027. It offers an intimate look at the artist whose charisma and cultural pride charmed the nation and helped to redefine representation for Mexican American women in pop music. The Briscoe emphasizes that Selena’s story aligns with the museum’s broader mission to explore the American West through the people who shaped it.
Dyer’s portraits, shot in San Antonio and across South Texas, capture the blend of confidence and authenticity central to Selena’s singular brand. His work documenting the star has appeared in museums nationwide, including the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
To complement the exhibition, the Briscoe has launched a summer film series titled “Siempre Tejano,” which spotlights movies about Selena and the cultural currents that shaped her career. Screenings will take place on the third Sunday of June, July and August, and entrance is included with general admission tickets.
The exhibition arrives during a busy summer for the Briscoe, which will also open “Tejano Legacy: Another American Origin Story” on July 24. The museum calls it the most ambitious exhibition in its history. The major historical showcase will trace 400 years of Tejano presence in American Western culture.
$8-$16, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday-Monday through Jan. 4, 2027, Briscoe Western Art Museum, 210 W. Market St., (210) 299-4499, briscoemuseum.org.
