As one could guess, when a rodent asks for baked goods, chaos inevitably follows.
For San Antonio families, that may be especially true as the Magik Theatre’s launches its 2026-27 season this weekend with If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. The high-energy adaptation will also be the public debut of major renovations to the long-running children’s theater at Hemisfair.
To celebrate the Saturday, Oct. 3, Magik is hosting a free “Party in the Park” at Hemisfair at 3:30 p.m. that day, which will wrap up before the 5 p.m. play performance. The party will include themed activities and specially wrapped celebration cookies at concessions.
The production, which though Sunday, Oct. 25, reimagines Laura Numeroff’s beloved children’s book as a fast-paced physical comedy directed by Pam Ramirez, a professional clown and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus alum.
The show stars local performers Michael Roberts as the mischievous Mouse and Christopher Neuter as the increasingly exasperated Boy, whose quiet afternoon spirals into an escalating chain of comic mishaps.
But rather than simply recreate the familiar picture book, the Magik’s adaptation leans into slapstick and circus-inspired humor. Ramirez, who studied at the acclaimed Dell’Arte School of Physical Theatre, has infused the 50-minute production with engaging visual gags and a comic book-inspired story-within-a-story that’s designed to keep young audiences entertained.
The opening also gives patrons their first chance to experience the fruits of Magik Theatre’s extensive summer renovation project. The multimillion-dollar upgrades include quadrupled ADA-accessible seating and entry points, a new HVAC, plumbing, electrical and security system and refreshed theater and lobby spaces.
This season’s theme for the Magik Theatre is “Fun, Fantastical Friends,” and the exploits of a cookie-seeking mouse seems on-target.
