Modern Mexican restaurant Bokobá has opened in the north-of-downtown spot previously occupied by Chela’s Tacos.
Bokobá, 3420 North St. Mary’s St., had a soft launch this Wednesday with a live DJ set — something guests can expect from the hip eatery going forward, according to its Instagram account. The renovated spot also features a sleek bar and lounge.
Husband-and-wife team Sergio Gonzalez and Maria Sanchez own and operate the restaurant, according to an Express-News report.
Bokobá’s menu focuses on traditional Mexican techniques as applied to cuisine from around the world, such as its Mexican Clam Chowder made with crema de poblano, the daily reports.
The eatery hasn’t yet posted operating hours or its menu on social media accounts, nor does it have a website. However, Bokobá’s Facebook page shows that Daniel V. Mendoza serves as its head chef.
Owner Gonzalez told the Express-News he began developing Bokobá’s business plan when he bought both Chela’s Tacos locations in mid-July. While Bokobá has fully taken over the St. Mary’s Street Chela’s, Gonzalez plans to keep the Chela’s on Broadway the same, according to the daily.
