A new restaurant has opened in Northwest San Antonio that specializes in Cantonese cuisine, including dim sum, or Chinese small dishes such as steamed dumplings, which are typically enjoyed at brunch.
Tasty Modern Asian Kitchen, 9502 I-10 near Wurzbach Road, held its soft opening Feb. 28, and glowing online reviews have been popping up ever since. Posts on the popular Facebook foodie group San Antonio Restaurants have called special attention to the green beans, Beijing roast duck, wonton soup, pan-fried dumplings and more.
Cantonese cuisine, also known as Yue or Guangdong cuisine, is from the Guangdong province of China. It’s known for its subtle and fresh flavors, which balance flavor profiles such as the umami of soy sauce and the zing of ginger while incorporating less heat than some other regional cuisines.

Dim sum stalwarts on the menu include xiu mai, steamed BBQ pork buns, Shanghai steamed soup dumplings, fried shrimp-and-pork puffs and steamed shrimp rice noodles. For the more adventurous eaters, the restaurant also serves chicken feet with bean sauce, jellyfish-and-pig trotter salad and ginger-and-scallion beef tripe.
San Antonio isn’t known for its strong dim sum scene. However, based on early reviews of Tasty Modern Asian Kitchen, that might soon change.
Be warned, though: the dining spot only offers dim sum from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. — it’s a brunch affair, after all.
