The Wonder restaurant chain — a viral food sensation known for its expansive celebrity-chef offerings and delivery-first model — has put a San Antonio expansion on its menu.

The chain plans to open two storefront eateries here as early as October, state regulatory filings show. One is located in Northwest San Antonio and the other in the bedroom community of Schertz.

Founded by former Walmart exec Marc Lore in 2018, Wonder describes itself as a “new kind of food hall.” The company, which operates more than 100 stores, primarily on the East Coast, has become known for an innovative business model that emphasizes speedy service, digital ordering and flexible dining options ranging from pizza and burgers to steaks and salad bowls.

The concept’s food is pre-cooked at an off-site commissary, then completed at the restaurant for diners with different tastes to enjoy together or take to go. This allows each Wonder unit to house multiple options and satisfy a range of customers at once, company officials have told industry publications.

Many of the company’s “fast fine” options are celebrity-chef concepts, and it’s partnered with the likes of Bobby Flay, José Andrés and Marcus Samuelsson, according to media reports.

While Wonder restaurants offer limited dine-in space, they’re designed to deliver food via mobile app. In 2024, the company purchased the food delivery service Grubhub, and it’s since expanded delivery options for customers.

The Northwest San Antonio Wonder will be located at 5230 De Zavala Road, according to recent filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, while the Schertz store will be at 18406 Station Road. Both are described as $1 million interior finish-out projects.

Both are listed with the TDLR as having Oct. 10 completion dates, but project manager Lauren Rodriguez told the Current that permitting delays have pushed back the timeline.

Wonder officials didn’t respond to the Current’s request for comment, and the company’s website offered no opening dates for the new stores.

The fast-growing company unveiled its Texas expansion plans early this year, sating it will open 100 units statewide by 2027. It’s since opened locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In a press statement, officials said the Lone Star State’s “suburban areas, characterized by densely populated communities and car-dependent infrastructure” make it an ideal market.

“We’re excited to enter Texas and introduce more people to what makes Wonder unique — chef-crafted menus, unmatched variety, and seamless convenience,” CEO Tony Hoggett added in the statement.
