One of the top players in San Antonio’s contemporary dining scene has joined forces with a historic River Walk hotel property, and the pair’s first concept, a downtown brasserie, will debut in December.

Emmer & Rye Hospitality — the Austin-based restaurant group behind Pearl’s Pullman Market and its Michelin-starred Isidore and Nicosi — will serve as the culinary partner for the Sitio El Tropicano Hotel, previously El Tropicano, officials with the two businesses said Tuesday.

The pair’s first concept, the brasserie-style Barberry, will initially open for dinner service in December, before expanding to all-day dining options.

Staying true to Emmer & Rye’s dedication to showcasing Texas ingredients, the name Barberry refers to a berry native to Texas. Known for its subtle tartness and vibrant red hue, the barberry has a citrusy flavor that’s often used to balance out stronger flavors in a dish.

Menu highlights will include Wagyu steak tartare, a Stetson chopped salad, chicken-fried quail and sweet corn ravioles du Dauphine, according to details shared by officials. The partners didn’t release details about drinks at Barberry, but if Emmer & Rye’s other concepts are any indication, the restaurant will feature a strong wine list along with handcrafted cocktails.

The historic Sitio El Tropicano, which has the distinction of being the first River Walk hotel, has rebranded following a $100 million renovation. The revitalized 315-room hotel is set to welcome back guests in December.

In Tuesday’s announcement, the partners teased other dining concepts, including an open-air poolside eatery, a lobby cafe and a provisions shop. Reservations for stays at the property are currently open for Dec. 15 and onward.

Texas politics is a mess. We make it a readable mess.
