The Dakota East Side Ice House has officially closed its doors.
The popular East Side gathering spot signed off with a Tuesday evening Facebook post with the simple message: “As a wise pig once said … ‘A-buh-dee, a-buh-dee, a-buh-dee … th-that’s all, folks!’”
The post also included a picture of its front door with a sign that read, “Shut happens.”
The casual hangout known for its “Just be nice, dammit!” ethos was originally scheduled to close on Sunday, Aug. 9. However, its eclectic clientele rallied to raise funds in hopes of staving off its demise.
Even though fans raised over $14,000 of the $16,000 initially requested to keep the lights on, its fundraising goal was subsequently raised to $75,000.
Opened in 2018, the Dakota became known as a community space that hosted everything from live music and poetry readings to drag shows, political watch parties and neighborhood meetings.
“Thank you to every employee, musician, artist, regular, neighbor, dancer, poet, and friend who came through our doors,” owner Kent Oliver said in a statement when its impending closure was originally announced. “You gave this place its soul.”
