Masskrugstemmen, a traditional Bavarian stein-holding contest, will arrive at Krause’s Cafe in New Braunfels — challenging strong men and women to hold beer-filled steins in front of their bodies as long as they can — on Saturday, May 18.
Don’t be fooled, holding a beer-filled stein correctly in front of you (without drinking) is more difficult than it sounds. The U.S. Steinholding Association actually offers a lot of endurance exercises and training tips on its website.
Krause’s launched the Masskrugstemmen series on May 4, but interested competitors can still enter several qualifying contests — the $20 entry fee includes a stein and your choice of Hofbräu beer — before the two best stein-holders enter a final local round on August 17.
The local finalist will have a chance to compete in the Masskrugstemmen at the Hofbrauhaus in New York City, which awards its national champion with a trip to Germany.
The Current has reached out for more information, but we’d imagine the competition also includes serious bragging rights and a trophy that none of your friends have.
