Downtown San Antonio is fixin’ to get a new live country music venue, and it will flaunt a decidedly feminine flair.

La Honky Tonk will open later this month in the space at 909 Broadway formerly occupied by Augie’s BBQ, which closed earlier this year due to slow-crawling construction along the Broadway corridor.

Co-owner Richard Bocanegra said he anticipates a Nov. 16 soft opening for the nightspot, which is in the midst of an interior finish-out. A grand opening will take place sometime next month, most likely Dec. 21, he added.

Bocanegra and business partner James Gonzaba are also the team behind El Honky Tonk, 316 N. Flores St. That bar focuses on male country and Tejano artists for its playlist, which ranges from Vicente Fernández to George Strait.

The partners envision La Honky Tonk as a sister bar to their masculine flagship location. In contrast to its brother, La Honky Tonk will focus on female country artists such as Carrie Underwood and Dolly Parton.

A large pink neon boot will figure in La Honky Tonk’s exterior signage, and more pink neon, along with chandeliers with pink bulbs, will illuminate the inside. Elements of the design are influenced by singer Miranda Lambert’s Nashville restaurant and bar, Casa Rosa, Bocanegra said.

The venue will host live music and has an audience capacity of approximately 300.

“This won’t be your everyday honky tonk,” Bocanegra said in an Instagram video discussing the new nightspot. “This will be pink, festive, Nashville party-theme style.”

Bocanegra said the completion construction on Broadway emboldened he and Gonzaba to move the project forward with increased urgency. The partners are now waiting on the city to approve the name change for the property, which they bought Sept. 2.

“We’re pretty much done with the whole buildout, it’s just a matter of fixtures and permits,” Bocanegra added.

In the future, Bocanegra hopes to have La Honky Tonk open during the day as a coffee shop. However, the business is still looking for a coffee vendor, so that side of the business won’t roll out in tandem with the bar.
