San Antonio fast-food chain Burger Boy’s original location on the St. Mary’s Strip is temporarily closed after a blaze ripped through the building last Friday, according to company officials.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, our original location at 2323 N. St. Mary’s St. will be temporarily closed until further notice,” Burger Boy said in a social media statement. “We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and support.”
San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) officials said a call came in from the property at 11:09 p.m. Friday. Upon arrival, crews found a kitchen fire that had partially spread to the attic. No injuries were reported, and firefighters suppressed the blaze in approximately 10 minutes and remained on scene to ensure it hadn’t spread further.
SAFD officials were unable to provide details on the cause of the fire.
The Current reached out to Burger Boy officials for additional comment but got no response by press time Monday afternoon.
A longtime fixture for downtown-area diners, Burger Boy is known for its classic burgers and late-night crowd. Founder Carl Bates opened the first restaurant at the St. Mary’s location in 1983, inspired by his father Frank Bate’s Whopper Burger concept from 1955. The younger Bates built on his father’s idea to create a local favorite that’s remained a city dining staple.
Bates ultimately sold the business to local investors in 2017. Today, the venture operates 10 locations across San Antonio, meaning fans can still get their Burger Boy fix while work crews repair the original St. Mary’s store.
