Asian fusion spot Stixs & Stone is permanently closing its doors so critically lauded chef-owner Leo Davila can pursue what he called another “amazing opportunity” in San Antonio.

In an Instagram video posted Friday, Davila said he’ll shutter his four-year-old restaurant Saturday, March 29, but promised he and his team would soon resurface with another project. He didn’t reveal details about the new venture, only that he’d share more soon.

“Stixs & Stone started as an idea, turned into a restaurant and became something bigger than I could have imagined,” Davila said in written statement accompanying the clip. “This place was built on passion, long hours and a whole lot of trial and error — but more than anything, it was built with the support of an incredible team and a city that celebrates great food. While we’re closing this chapter, I’m not going anywhere, and my team is not going anywhere.”

Stixs & Stone, located at 5718 B Wurzbach Road, is known for mixing Asian and Tex-Mex flavors. Davila — who’s of Mexican and Chinese heritage — created a menu that ranges from crowd pleasers such as Korean fried cauliflower and wok-fried pork belly to elegant specialities including pan-seared duck breast in hibiscus mole.

In addition to earning praise from local critics, including the Current’s Ron Bechtol, Davila gained national attention for placing in the top five on Food Network’s Big Restaurant Bet competition show. In 2023, he was selected as a UNESCO Chef Ambassador to represent the San Antonio’s culinary scene both locally and globally.

Last fall, Texas Monthly named Stixs & Stone’s Big Red-and-barbacoa taco flight to its list of the 50 Best Tacos in Texas, calling Davila’s creation “a paean to the iconic Alamo City pairing.”

“My heart is full with immense pride, humility and gratitude,” Davila said in Friday’s post. “I am forever grateful to the community of San Antonio for your love and support with Stixs & Stone. We’ll see y’all at the next project!”

Stixs & Stone will be open noon-4 p.m. on its final day of service and only will offer a limited menu, according to the Instagram post.
