The team behind Asian-fusion restaurant Stixs & Stone is planning a June launch for a new dining spot that will highlight locally grown ingredients, chef-owner Leo Davila told the Current.
Davila hinted at the details behind his new concept after revealing last Friday that he plans to close the four-year-old Stixs & Stone on Saturday, March 29.
“The closure wasn’t a plea for help,” Davila said in an interview Monday. “Business was great. But we had to let go of the storefront to make way for something better.”
While Davila declined to reveal the full details about his new concept, he did say the opening will take place around June and the menu will prominently feature Texas ingredients and focus on local farmers. The restaurant also will feature an expanded selection of moles, one of the signature sauces at Stixs & Stone, which focused on blending Tex-Mex and Asian flavors.
“Nobody loves the Lone Star State like Texans,” Davila said. “I’m excited to spotlight Texas farmers and local ingredients in the new menu.”
According to Davila, some Stixs & Stone favorites will make a return at the new restaurant, including his signature Big Red and barbacoa flight, Chicken & Hong Kong Waffle and sticky ribs. The new concept won’t be a direct revival of Stixs & Stone, however.
“We needed to shed old skin in order to grow,” Davila explained.
In the meantime, Davila and his team are staying busy with upcoming pop-up events starting in April. He also plans to host chef collaborations, private dinners and wine dinners. Those interested in attending a pop-up or dinner should keep an eye on the Stixs & Stone social media channels for event updates, he added.
Guests at these events will likely get a sneak peek at some of the new menu items planned for the forthcoming restaurant.
The change will also allow Davila to bring back former team members.
“That’s what I’m most excited about — this move is for the better because I’ll be able to fully take care of a larger team,” he said.
“I’m excited to show San Antonio what’s next.”
Stixs & Stone, 5718 B Wurzbach Road, will be open this Wednesday through Thursday from noon to 9 p.m., and Friday through Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.
