Brian Wilson, visionary singer-songwriter behind beloved rock institution the Beach Boys, has died at age 82, family members confirmed Wednesday morning.
Wilson’s family announced his passing in an Instagram post but didn’t disclose his cause of death. Last year, family sought conservatorship after revealing that the musician was living with a neurocognitive disorder akin to dementia.
“We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away,” post said. “We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world.”
Often credited as a musical — if a bit eccentric — genius, Wilson helped pioneer the concept of using the recording studio as an instrument.
Earlier in their career, the Beach Boys were responsible for a bevy of lightweight teenybopper hits, including “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “Fun Fun Fun” and “I Get Around.” However, as the band progressed, Wilson led it in a more experimental direction, resulting in more mature albums such as Pet Sounds, widely considered one of the most influential albums of all time. The album left us with timeless tracks including “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “God Only Knows.” This album was closely followed by the single release for “Good Vibrations.”
Wilson became increasingly more erratic and eccentric as the band progressed. While recording Pet Sounds, Wilson filled his house with sand to “feel like he was at the beach,” according to a recounting by Michelle Williams of the Mamas and the Papas. Reportedly, he had carpenters install a sandbox with a low retaining wall in his dining room and placed his grand piano on top so he could dig his toes in as he composed.
As Wilson struggled with mental illness in the 1970s, he withdrew from the Beach Boys and public life. Although the band still tours, Wilson hasn’t been part of its lineup for decades.
In Dennis Wilson: The Real Beach Boy, brother and bandmate Dennis Wilson credited Brian Wilson with masterminding the whole operation. Indeed, Dennis Wilson didn’t even play on Pet Sounds, save for the track “It’s Not Me.”
“Brian Wilson is the Beach Boys,” said Dennis Wilson, the only Beach Boy who could actually surf. “He is the band. We’re his fucking messengers. He is all of it. Period. We’re nothing. He’s everything.”
