Grammy-nominated country act Midland is playing San Antonio’s Boeing Center at Tech Port this Saturday as a stop on the band’s Get Lucky tour.
The Dripping Springs-based trio is touring behind newly released album Barely Blue, which came out Sept. 20 and features “Old Fashioned Feeling” and its title track, both of which have been released as singles. Midland’s logged a steady rise to prominence in the 10 years since its inception. Seven of its singles have made the Billboard country charts, including “Drinkin’ Problem,” “Burn Out,” “Make a Little,” “Cheatin’ Songs” and “Mr. Lonely.”
“Drinkin’ Problem” earned the band two Grammy nominations in 2018 for Best Country Song and Best Country Duo/Group Performance. To date, the song’s music video has racked up 233 million views on YouTube.
“People say I got a drinkin’ problem, but I’ve got no problem drinkin’ at all,” the song’s chorus explains. As with many of Midland’s tunes, the lyrics tie themselves up with a neat little bow.
Midland has gotten lyrical help from Music Row giant Shane McAnally and other industry songwriters throughout its career, leading to scathing criticism accusing the band of being “manufactured.”
While the group has received songwriting assistance, it formed organically when its members met and jammed at a friend’s wedding. As a self-described “retro-nuevo” country act, the band’s members got together over a shared desire to return to a “post-Urban Cowboy Country.”
Midland sets itself apart with lush vocal harmonies, clever lyrical turns of phrase and lonesome steel guitar that wails over tears-in-your-beer melodies. The overall effect harkens to ’80s and ’90s greats such as George Strait and Dwight Yoakam, the latter of whom sang “Fair to Midland,” the song for which the band is named.
In addition to its headlining tours, Midland hosts its own country cruise, which had its inaugural voyage April 2024. The business-savvy buckaroos also own the spirits brand Insolito Tequila.
Tickets to the Boeing Center show start at $49.50 and are still available on the Boeing Center website. The Wilder Blue is opening the evening.
