The dissimilar sounds of metalcore and folk had parallel heydays in the early 2000s. On the metalcore side, bands like Norma Jean and As I Lay Dying commanded big audiences of angsty teens, while Sufjan Stevens and Jose Gonzalez ignited a folk resurgence with their intricate and offbeat songcraft.
Meanwhile, Mewithoutyou became one of the more intriguing bands of that era by navigating both genres. The Philadelphia-based outfit combined distorted guitar progressions and elements of hardcore with moments of slam poetry and folkie “talk-singing” in the vein of Bob Dylan.
The combination made for an explosive live show, especially as frontman Aaron Weiss catapulted himself across the stage. Even today, Weiss is still known for his theatrical moves.
Now touring with Pedro the Lion — another early 2000s artifact clearly on the folkier end of the spectrum — Mewithoutyou will head to San Antonio for a show at Paper Tiger on Sunday, August 11.
Tickets ($25) are on sale and can be purchased at papertigersatx.com.
