St. Mary’s Strip music venue Paper Tiger over the weekend unveiled a new mural honoring the Prince of Darkness less than a week after his passing.
The Ozzy Osbourne mural, created by local muralist Nick Soupé (AKA @Souplaws on Instagram), adorns a wall on the side of the venue.
Ozzy Osbourne, former lead singer of pioneering metal band Black Sabbath, passed away Tuesday, July 22 after a long history of declining health including a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 2019. A cause of death is yet to be revealed.
Credited as one of the bands that invented heavy metal, Black Sabbath played a final farewell concert on July 5 in Birmingham, England. Titled “Back to the Beginning,” the full-circle moment proved a fitting bookend shortly before Ozzy’s passing.
Tony Iommi — founder, guitarist and sole continuous member of Black Sabbath — told ITV News that he believes Ozzy waited to die after he had said his goodbyes to his fans.
“I think he really just held out to do that show,” Iommi added. “I really feel — me and Geezer were talking about it last night — that we think he held out to do it. And just after that, he’s done it and said goodbye to the fans. And that was the end of it, really.”
Ozzy has a special connection with San Antonio, due to an infamous 1982 incident in which he pissed on the Alamo Cenotaph while intoxicated and wearing his wife Sharon’s dress. Following the incident, Osbourne was booked into Bexar County Jail and forced to pay a $10,000 fine. He was also barred from playing the Alamo City for a decade.
If an Ozzy mural doesn’t belong in the Alamo City, where the hell does it belong?
