More than four decades later, the overseers of the Alamo still sound a little salty about the shrine’s brush with recently deceased heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne.
Following news of the five-time Grammy winner’s passing at the age of 76, the Alamo took to Facebook Tuesday afternoon to recall when Osbourne took a leak on the grounds of the centuries-old Spanish Mission.
“This act profoundly and rightfully upset many who hold this site sacred,” the Alamo’s Facebook account said.
In 1982, Osbourne made international headlines when he was arrested and booked into the Bexar County Jail after taking a piss on the Alamo Cenotaph. As a result of the drunken incident, the “Prince of Darkness” was banned from performing in San Antonio for 10 years.
Osbourne has expressed regret several times for the incident since then, even personally apologizing to then-Mayor Nelson Wolf in 1992, and revisiting the Alamo for a tour in 2015. However, those goodwill efforts didn’t stop the Alamo’s caretakers from bringing up the matter again Tuesday.
“Today, we acknowledge Ozzy Osbourne’s journey from regret to reconciliation at the historic site, and we extend our condolences to his family, friends, and fans around the world,” the Facebook account added.
Folks may not always remember the Alamo, but one thing’s for sure: the Alamo doesn’t forget.
