The University of Texas at San Antonio and the Oasis student housing complex are working with the Red Cross to assist at least 10 students displaced by the tornado that touched down in the area, San Antonio Fire Department officials told the Current.

Depending on availability, affected residents will be able to move into vacant units at the complex or provided temporary lodging at nearby hotels, according to of

What started as a routine Wednesday morning quickly turned into a frantic evacuation for UTSA students at the Oasis as the tornado damaged the complex and tore off one building’s roof.

Abigail Fite, a UTSA architecture student, was visiting her boyfriend at his apartment when the tornado struck.

“We were watching Star Wars, when we heard an eerie, screaming noise from outside,” Fite told the Current. “My boyfriend attempted to go outside but immediately heard a loud crash.”

The roof of the westernmost building was sheered off by the tornado, exposing the wooden framework beneath. The damage scattered insulation, roof shingles and wood across the property. The falling materials shattered windows and twisted sections of the metal fence surrounding the pool. Debris littered the parking lot.

Residents gathered outside the damaged building Wednesday, many waiting to retrieve their belongings from the units they evacuated hours before. Despite the extensive damage, no injuries were reported, according to the San Antonio Fire Department.

Fite said she and her boyfriend are staying with her parents following the storm. He’s expected to move into his new apartment later this week.

Fire Department officials urged residents to remain cautious as cleanup and damage assessments continue. Authorities also reminded residents affected by the storm to avoid damaged structures and follow guidance from emergency crews while recovery efforts continue.
